A man recently released from a Florida prison is back in jail in Alabama after he confessed to the brutal murders of a 23-year-old mother and her 6-year-old son in 2002.
Monica Rollins was 8-months pregnant when she was stabbed to death in her home in Heflin, Law & Crime reported. She and 6-year-old Dalton were killed days before their bodies were discovered. Family found the bodies when they hadn’t heard from her for a while.
Rollins’ 3-year-old son, Aaron, was found hiding in a closet unharmed.
Lewis Spivey, 39, served 15 years for an unrelated robbery and assault in Bay County, Florida, and had been recently released.
Heflin investigators, who has suspected Spivey from the beginning, worked doggedly on the case for two decades.
“It was definitely the hardest case, and I’ve worked several homicide cases in my career,” said Captain Scott Bonner. “The box of reports and everything we had to go through, that alone took several months.”
Spivey and Rollins knew one another, Bonner said. And when it finally came time to sit down and talk with him, police said he gave them a “complete confession.” He outlined the crime and took “sole responsibility” for the murders of Monica and Dalton Rollins.
He’s being held without bond at the Cleburne County Jail.
