Supporters of the family of a Pennsylvania teacher woman dead with 20 stab wounds are pushing for Mayor Jim Kenney to order a medical examiner to take a closer look at the case.
An online petition, which currently has 155,841 signatures, is urging people to reach out to the mayor to reopen the case of Ellen Greenberg, an elementary school teacher found stabbed dead with wounds that some experts believe couldn’t have been self-inflicted.
“Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenny has the power to order his Chief Medical Examiner to reopen Ellen’s case,” the petition says.
As CrimeOnline reported, 27-year-old Ellen was found fatally stabbed in her Manayunk apartment in 2011. Greenberg’s fiancé, Sam Goldberg, said he left for the gym while Ellen chopped up fruit in the kitchen.
He returned home to find the front door locked, with the swing lock attached to the inside side of the door.
I truly can't get over this case & wonder why pressure isn't being put on the DA to do the right thing.
First ruled a homicide, then changed to suicide. Complete LE incompetence followed by cover-up at play after deep dive.As a parent, how could you not be so distraught waking… https://t.co/hgGq1bV4bO

According to police, Goldberg said he called and texted Ellen numerous times, but when he couldn’t get an answer and couldn’t get help from the apartment management, he broke the lock and walked inside.
Inside the apartment, Ellen was found slumped over in the kitchen, with “some of her upper body/shoulders resting against the lower half of the white kitchen cabinets.”
Along with a significant laceration at the back of her head caused by a knife, she had multiple bruises in various stages of healing, the autopsy report said.
According to court documents, the city medical examiner’s office initially classified the death as a homicide. However, following a meeting with police and prosecutors, they later changed the determination to suicide.
The Philadelphia District Attorney upheld Ellen’s death as a suicide despite some of the wounds showing no signs of bleeding, suggesting that she was not alive when those wounds were inflicted.
Her parents, Dr. Joshua Greenberg and Sandee Greenberg, have said from the beginning that they suspected foul play. Since her death, they’ve been battling with officials to take a closer look at the case.
“It’s hard to believe with the amount of facts in the universe that no one can understand where we stand right now,” Sandee told Fox News Digital. “And the politicians, they are unconscionable.”

“My daughter was being abused,” Dr. Josh Greenberg added. “She had injuries on her body consistent with abuse.”
“That’s what I think the whole issue of this story. Somebody didn’t want Ellen’s abuse to get out there … and that’s why she’s dead.”
While Greenberg’s parents pursue legal action against the city of Philadelphia through two court cases, the Chester County District Attorney’s Office initiated an independent investigation into Ellen’s death in August 2022.
However, the case was not transferred to Chester County investigators until former Attorney General Josh Shapiro and Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner recused themselves from the case.
