Authorities in upstate South Carolina found the body of a missing man in a barrel on a Cherokee County lake last week and have arrested a man for desecrating human remains.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said that Jeffrey Sutphin, 56, was reported missing on June 15, although he was last seen on June 4, WHNS reported.
“Deputies found the barrel near the shore (of Lake Thicketty) and upon opening it found human remains,” Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said. “It appears the body had been in the container for a number of days.”
Investigators determined that Sutphin died in neighboring Spartanburg County. Eric Shawn Fetzer, 25, was charged in Cherokee County with destruction, desecration, or removal of human remains.
Deputies said they expected additional arrests in the near future.
