Kidnapped Michigan Tot Wynter Cole Smith Found Dead

A 2-year-old Michigan girl, reportedly abducted by her mother’s ex-boyfriend over the weekend, has been found dead.

Lansing Police announced Wednesday night that a search team had found the body of Wynter Cole Smith near Detroit’s Coleman A. Young International Airport.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, Rashad Maleek Trice was believed to have kidnapped the toddler on Sunday after stabbing the girl’s 22-year-old mother, and fled in her car. The mother reportedly stabbed Trice as well, prompting the kidnapping.

Authorities issued an Amber Alert and launched an intensive search. Trice was arrested Monday morning after driving from Lansing to Detroit and then on to St. Clair Shores. Wynter was not with him when he was arrested, and he reportedly refused to cooperate with investigators.

“This is not the outcome anyone has hoped for,” Lansing Police Chief Ellery Sosebee said.

Trice was arraigned on charges of assault with intent to murder, two counts of criminal sexual conduct, home invasion, unlawful imprisonment, aggravated domestic violence, and unlawful driving away of an automobile and felonious assaults after his arrest. Sosebee said more charges are expected in light of the discovery of the little girl’s body.

Police have not said how the little girl died. WDIV reported that the girl was found in an overgrown alley, saying that police used Trice’s cell phone to track his movements in the area. FBI agents were seen in the area conducting what they called a “thorough” investigation of the site.
