Gunman on Scooter in Queens Shoots 4, 1 Fatally

One man is dead and three more people wounded after a gunman on a scooter opened fire, apparently randomly, in Queens around midday on Saturday.

Police said they had taken a suspect into custody and recovered a 9mm handgun with an extended clip, WNBC reported.

The shooting began at about 11:12 a.m. in Cypress Hills, police said, when the gunman shot a 21-year-old man in the chest. He was taken to Brookdale Hospital with injuries said to be serious but not life-threatening.

About 15 minutes later, an 86-year-old man was walking on Jamaica Avenue when he was shot multiple times in the back. Police said he was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Minutes later, the gunman shot a 63-year-old man in the shoulder just a few blocks away. He was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center with serious, life-threatening injuries.

About a half hour after the shooting began, another man was hit in the torso on the edge of the Kew Gardens-Richmond Hill neighborhoods. He was also taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center with serious, life-threatening injuries.

Police said they are also investigating to see if an incident in which a group of people were just missed by gunfire to determine if that shooting was connected.

Investigators said the quickly sent out a description of the suspect to all officers in the city. Two officers in Jamaica, Queens, spotted him and made the arrest. Charges against him were pending, The New York Post said.

Jasvir Singh, owner of Zoom Zoom Wireless on Jamaica Avenue, told The New York Daily News he saw the suspect ride by his shop on the scooter.

“I saw just somebody in front of my store coming on the scooter, and he did a U-turn, and he loaded his gun and he just started shooting,” Singh said.

Gabriela Tipan, an employee at a nearby nail salon, told the paper she saw a man”waiting for the light to cross the street and someone came and shot him three times.”
