The body of a missing 7-year-old Massachusetts girl was reportedly discovered on Monday, a day after she vanished.
WCVB reported that Anna Mburu was recovered from the Merrimack River. A search ensued after Mburu disappeared from her home in Lowell, which is located not far from the river where her body was found.
Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said Mburu’s body was discovered a mile-and-a-half from where they believe she got into the water.
“Divers ultimately located the child, we believe to be, about 15 to 20 yards from the shore. She was in water between 8- and 9-feet deep,” Ryan commented.
According to Mass Live, Ryan said that elevated water levels and heavy rain hampered their search for Mburu. As a result, the full search effectively began on Monday morning — hours after Mburu was reported missing.
“[The search] included the recovery of video from neighboring homes, it included the use of drones, the airwing for a period of time yesterday while it was available due to weather,” Ryan said.
Mass Live reported that Massachusetts Environmental Police discovered Mburu using side-scanner sonar.
At the time of her disappearance, police said Mburu is autistic and used limited communication.
The chief medical examiner will determine Mburu’s cause of death. However, Ryan said there is no evidence of foul play.
