Emerging reports indicated that disgraced sports doctor Larry Nassar, who is serving a life sentence for sexually abusing young gymnasts, was stabbed multiple times at Florida federal prison on Sunday.
Sources told the Associated Press that Nassar is in stable condition after an altercation with another inmate at United States Penitentiary Coleman. According to the sources, Nassar was stabbed in the chest and back.
Following the Associated Press report, Joe Rojas, president of the local correction officers’ union, told CNN that Nassar was stabbed 10 times — including twice in the neck.
In 2018, the former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University doctor was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison for abuse that spanned two decades. Nassar also confessed to possessing child pornography, for which he is serving a 60-year sentence.
The Associated Press noted that the Bureau of Prisons has been burdened with understaffing issues for years. Two of the guards overseeing Nassar’s unit were completing mandatory overtime shifts at the time of Sunday’s incident, sources said.
