Firefighters Shot in Possible ‘Targeted’ Attack Identified; Shooter Still at Large

Alabama police are searching for a shooter, or shooters, responsible for firing at two Birmingham firefighters Wednesday morning.

According to NBC 13, the incident unfolded as the firefighters did maintenance work around the “Norwood area at Station 9 on 27th Street North,” in Birmingham. Either a man or multiple men allegedly entered an open bay door at the station at around 8:30 a.m.

Both firefighters were rushed to the  UAB Hospital in critical condition. The firefighters were later identified as Jamal Jones and Jordan Melton. Melton remains in critical condition, while Jones has been upgraded to serious condition.

No suspects had been identified as of Thursday morning.

Police say that attack appeared to be targeted. Investigators are currently trying to piece the clues tofether to identify the suspects, adding that it’s “extremely unusual for someone to come target one of our fire stations,” according to ABC News.

“At this point in time, we feel like it may be a targeted attack,” Police Chief Scott Thurmond said during a Wednesday news conference. “We don’t why it would be a targeted attack but that’s one of the things that we’re trying to determine at this point in time.”
