One person is dead and another was wounded after a shooting Wednesday afternoon inside a Florida Walmart.
Police and medical units responded to the Florida City store at about 3 p.m. and took one person into custody after searching the store, WPLG reported.
Miami-Dade Police said the shooting happened during an altercation between two groups of people, with three on each side. Miami-Dade Police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta said officers searched the store and took one of the six people involved into custody. Four more fled the scene, and police are searching for them. The person who was killed was the sixth person involved.
Zabaleta said the injured person, who is in stable condition at the hospital, was an innocent bystander, WSVN reported.
“From what we understand, [this patient] was not involved in this altercation, happens to be a customer who appears to be struck by a stray bullet,” he said.
Zabaleta said several other people suffered minor cuts and scrapes running from the gunfire. They were treated on the scene and released, he said. Another woman was injured when she slipped and fell while running from the gunfire. She drove herself to the hospital.
Witnesses said the shooting took place inside the store near the front.
“I heard the shots, and everyone was coming out,” said a woman.
“I heard six shots, ‘pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow,’” said a man.
Walmart released a statement:
“We are deeply saddened by what took place in our Florida City store, and our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones. The store is closed at this time. We will work closely with local law enforcement through the course of their investigation and will refer further questions to police.“
Police have not released the names of the suspect or the victims.
