An Ohio mom and her boyfriend have been arrested in connection with the death of her 6-month-old son.
Vinton County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Aaron Ervin told WSAZ that Kasley Hoover went to a neighbor’s Tuesday night at about 11:30 p.m. to call 911. The baby was struggling to breathe, she said.
Deputies and medical personnel arrived at the home and performed CPR before rushing the boy to a hospital in neighboring Hocking County, where he died.
Hoover and her boyfriend, Phillip Johnson, were arrested and arraigned Thursday afternoon. Johnson was charged with reckless homicide and endangering children, while Hoover was charged with endangering children.
Ervin said investigators are awaiting autopsy results to determine the exact cause of death, but evidence and interviews gave them enough to file charges.
Prosecuting attorney James Payne said that the evidence indicates whatever happened was not a one-time occurrence.
“At this early stage, it’s our belief this was not a one-time incident, that the child involved exhibited bruising which seems to indicate different stages where he’d been abused in the recent past,” Payne said. “They can tell from the discoloration of the bruising and some of the other injuries involved. It’s heartbreaking, but we’re going to make sure justice is done in this case.”
Payne said additional charges are possible.
Johnson has a $100,000 bond, while Hoover’s bond was set at $50,000. Both are due back in court next week.
