Security Guard Killed in Oregon Hospital Shooting; Hospital Staffer Wounded

A hospital security guard was killed and another person wounded in a shooting at Portland, Oregon, hospital on Saturday in an incident that ended hours later with the suspect killed by police during a standoff.

Portland Police said they responded to Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital just before 11 a.m. when they were called about a person seen armed with at least one gun. By the time they arrived, shots had been fired and the security guard was shot.

Hospital staff began treatment on the guard while officers began searching for the gunman. After learning the suspect had left the hospital, officers launched a search outside the area. At one point, they shut down and evacuated a nearby grocery story after getting tip that the suspect might be inside, but after a detailed search, officers released the store back to the employees.

Meanwhile, the security guard was transferred to a trauma center where he died from his injuries.

Hours later, police had determined the suspect was in a vehicle and located that vehicle in the city of Gresham, directly east of Portland. Witnesses told the Oregonian they saw police surrounding a maroon and white van outside a U.S. Bank there and heard three or four shots.

At 4:30 p.m., a police spokesman said officers had fatally shot the suspect outside the bank.

The hospital said in a statement Saturday afternoon that a hospital employee was wounded in the shooting and was in stable condition. They identified the security guard as Bobby Smallwood.

“Words cannot express the profound grief we are experiencing,” said Kathryn Correia, Legacy Health president and CEO. “We offer our unwavering support to Bobby’s loved ones, to our patients in our care, to the staff at Legacy Good Samaritan and to all of our employees and providers suffering today.”

Investigators have not released the name of the suspect or revealed a motive in the shooting.
