4 Hurt in Random Stabbings; Cops Fatally Shoot Suspect

Maryland police shot and killed a man Saturday morning suspected of randomly stabbing four people in a 10 minute period.

Montgomery County police said they were called to a thrift store on Veirs Mill Road just after 10:30 a.m. and found a woman suffering from stab wounds. A minute later, they received a second call about two other women being stabbed nearby by. They also found a man with superficial wounds at that area.

Two of the three women were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, but the third was listed in critical condition. The man was not taken to a hospital.

Witnesses gave police a description of the suspect and they located a man matching that description about 10 minutes later, holding a large butcher knife. He refused officers’ commands to drop the knife and instead lunged at an officer, who shot him. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigation Division is handling the investigation into the shooting.

Investigators have not released the name of the suspect, nor have they determined a motive for the attack.

“While we do not know the motive for this attack today, I continue to believe we need to do more to address the markedly increasing mental health crises in our community,” County Executive Marc Elrich said, according to WTOP. “We need to find ways to avert these kinds of tragedies from occurring and not put our officers into the difficult and tragic position of determining when it is necessary to take a life.”
