An Ohio boy playing in the yard of an apartment building was struck and killed by a stolen car Saturday night.
Columbus police said the 4-year-old was with his mother in the grassy area behind the building in the South Franklinton neighborhood just before 9 p.m. when the Kia jumped a curb and hit him.
The driver got out of the car and fled the scene, WSYX reported.
Officers rushed the child to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, but he died shortly afterward.
Police identified the driver as 24-year-old Tyrell Shute, WBNS reported, and said he turned himself in Sunday morning.
According to court documents, police had attempted to stop Shute nearby a few minutes before the fatal encounter when they spotted a 2015 Kia Soul that had been reported stolen, but he fled that scene and recklessly drove through the apartment complex, where he hit the child.
Police said Shute called them at about 11 a.m. Sunday and told them where to find him. He was taken into custody without incident and charged with aggravated vehicular homicide.
