Parents Charged With Neglect After 5-Year-Old Boy Fatally Shoots Toddler Brother

Indiana parents have been charged with multiple counts of neglect their 16-month-old son was shot and killed by his 5-year-old brother.

Deonta Jermaine Johnson, 27, and Shatia Tiara Welch, 24, also face charges of drug dealing and possession, the Lafayette Journal & Courier reported.

The coroner identified the victim as Isiah Johnson, as CrimeOnline reported.

Lafayette Police were called to Welch’s apartment at about 3 p.m. on March 28, the newspaper reported. Johnson and the two children were the only people in the apartment, according to prosecutors who said the couple had been charged with neglect resulting in death, neglect resulting in bodily injury, and neglect of a dependent.

Officials said the younger child died from a gunshot to the head and had marijuana in his blood. The 5-year-old tested positive for cocaine, prosecutors said.

Investigators said Deonta Johnson, who is the father of the toddler but not the older boy, said he woke up from sleeping on the couch, saw his 5-year-old son on the couch, then heard a boom. He took marijuana out to the car before going to the toddler’s bedroom, where he found him dead. He then called Welch.

Welch told investigators that she owned a gun and kept it in a locked safe under her bed. She said she had the gun out of the safe the weekend before the shooting but couldn’t remember if she locked the safe when she put it away.

Prosecutors said that police found the gun in the top drawer of a dresser in the parents’ bedroom.

Police searched the apartment and found 93 fentanyl pills, marijuana, and paraphernalia, prosecutors said. They also found the marijuana Johnson had moved to his car. He was also charged with obstruction of justice for moving the drug before police arrived.
