A Minnesota man has been charged with second degree murder after he shot and killed his girlfriend’s former boyfriend when the ex assaulted her at a St. Paul bus stop.
Witnesses said Lazarus Lamar Burns II, 31, was standing at the bus stop with a woman when another man, identified as Jermaine Ray John Baker, got off a bus and ran across the street to the bus stop, where he attacked the woman. Witnesses told police Baker knocked the woman to the ground, grabbed her hair and was yelling and “smashing her face in,” according to KSTP.
When Baker stopped hitting the woman, Burns fired multiple shots at him as he ran away and collapsed into the street. Police found him with two gunshots to the torso and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman told police that she had dated Baker off and on for about four years and had started dating Burns a few days ago. She said Baker frequently assaulted her, but she never reported it, and that she heard Burns tell him to “chill” before she heard the gunshots.
According to the police report, she had a swollen face and bumps on her head.
Burns told police that he did not know Baker and that he heard him say, “That’s my b**** bro,” before he attacked the woman. The documents say Burns told the officers that he’d witnessed abuse before in his life and that when he saw Baker attack his girlfriend, he “blacked out” and shot him.
