A couple in West Bengal, India, sold their 8-month-old baby to buy an iPhone and travel for Instagram content, police say.
According to The Indian Express, the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate was alerted to the alleged incident after some of the defendants’ residents saw the new phone and noticed that the infant hadn’t been seen in days.
Police identified the couple as Jaydev Ghosh and Sathi. After questioning the mother, police arrested her for human trafficking after she allegedly confessed.
“After interrogation, the mother admitted to the crime and informed that she and her husband wanted to use the money to take trips across the state so that they could create content for Instagram Reels,” officials said.
Police also said the the father attempted to sell their older child, a 7-year-old, but the plan allegedly failed, E Times reports. He’s now reportedly on the run.
Investigators found the baby, according to Barrackpore police, and the infant is now safe. Police declined further comment.
