1 Dead After Shooters Open Fire on Group of Women Celebrating in Chicago

A woman was killed and eight others wounded early Sunday morning when people got out of a vehicle in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood and opened fire on a group of women gathered outside.

One of the wounded, a 28-year-old woman, was shot eight times in the torso and was at Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition, WFLD reported. The other seven women were said to be in good condition at Mt. Sinai and Stroger Hospitals, police said.

The slain woman was 21 and was shot in the face, police said. She was transported to Mt. Sinai, where she was pronounced dead.

The shooting happened just before 1 a.m., according to investigators, who did not say why the women were gathered together. According to WBBM, video from the scene showed that it appeared to be a birthday celebration.

In a statement released later Sunday morning, Chicago police called the shooting a “reprehensible act of violence.”
