Accused Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann is scheduled to appear at an upcoming court hearing on Tuesday in at the Suffolk County Court in Riverhead, New York.
According to Newsday, Heuermann is set to appear before Supreme Court Justice Timothy Mazzei at 8 a.m. EST, where a bail request could be made. Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney argued for Heuermann to remain in jail without bail during his arraignment on July 14, claiming that he posed both a flight risk and an ongoing threat.
The allegations were based on Heuermann’s alleged communication with sex workers through various burner phones, monitoring the media coverage of the Gilgo Beach killings, and his connections to Las Vegas and South Carolina.
Heuremann’s defense lawyer, Michael J. Brown, previously said, “[I] reserve my right to make a bail application on the next or future court date, once we have a sufficient conversation with my client.”
As CrimeOnline previously reported, Heuermann was arrested on July 13 for the deaths of three of the four women known collectively as the “Gilgo Four.” The bodies were found within days of each other on Gilgo Beach in December 2010. All four women were buried in burlap sacks.
Heuermann has been charged with six counts of murder in the deaths of Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Megan Waterman, 22; and Amber Lynn Costello, 27; and is the prime suspect in the death of 25-year-old Maureen Brainard-Barnes.
Heuermann pleaded not guilty during his arraignment.
“There is nothing about Mr. Heuermann that would suggest that he is involved in these incidents,” Brown previously said.
Court documents indicate that prosecutors said they identified the defendant as the killer after obtaining a witness statement identifying him as the driver of a Chevrolet Avalanche, who had visited Costello’s home on the day before she was last seen alive.
According to the New York Post, when a new task force reexamined the evidence and “reinterviewed a pimp” in 2022, it led to Heuermann, a 59-year-old architect.
“This was the first time Rex Heuermann’s name had come up, and the first time that he had been identified as a potential suspect,” State Police Major Stephen Udice, commander of Troop L, said during a press conference on Monday.
“The task force worked as a team to move forward with that information, and the investigation ultimately confirmed that Rex Heuermann was, in fact, the individual responsible for, at minimum, the deaths of three women.”
Prosecutors said that investigators have also seized 279 firearms from Heuermann’s Massapequa Park residence and a “massive” amount of evidence.
Meanwhile, Heuermann remains behind bars at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility without bail. Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon said Heuermann is in an isolated cell alone and appears to be “comfortable.”
“He’s in the cell by himself, he’s receiving all the services that any other person who’s incarcerated will receive,” Toulon previously told WCBS 880.
“It seems like he’s very comfortable in his cell and his surroundings. He’s indicated to my staff that he would not be any issue to us and would be extremely compliant, so we’ll see how that plays out in the days and weeks ahead.”
Toulon added that they monitor and videotape Heuermann 24 hours a day, and “all inmate movement stops” when he is moved from one place to another within the jail.
