A New Jersey mother of two is dead after her ex-husband allegedly shot her and her dog before turning the gun on himself, NJ.com reports.
Around 5:10 a.m. Saturday, authorities in Ocean County received a 911 call from Kimberly Hoffman reporting that someone was attempting to break into her apartment in Little Egg Harbor.
Officers responded and forced their way into the unit, where they found Hoffman dead with an apparent gunshot wound to her face, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said in a statement, according to the Asbury Park Press.
Also inside the apartment: Hoffman’s dog, which was shot dead, and the body of Hoffman’s former husband, Carl Schulz Jr., who had shot himself in the head but was still alive.
Medics rushed Schulz to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, where he died.
Investigators determined that Schulz, 52, shot and killed Hoffman, 49, and the dog before shooting himself. Police have not said whether they have established a motive.
Hoffman has two sons; it was not clear whether Schulz was their father. A GoFundMe page is raising money for the children.
Loved ones of Hoffman remembered her as a kind person and doting mother.
“Kim was a remarkable person who touched the lives of many with her kindness, compassion, and infectious smile,” the GoFundMe page reads. “She had a heart of gold and was always there to lend a helping hand to those in need. As a dedicated mother, she poured her love into her two children, making sure they felt safe, loved, and cherished every day.”
The page continued: “Kim’s life was tragically cut short, leaving behind her children who now face a future without their beloved mother. The pain of her loss is immeasurable, and we are all devastated by this senseless act of violence. Our hearts ache for her children, and we want to do everything we can to ease their burden during this difficult time.
“As we grieve this devastating loss, we want to rally around Kim’s children, who meant the world to her. We have set up this GoFundMe page to provide support and stability for her children during this unimaginable time.”
Hoffman worked as the admissions director at a nursing home in Little Egg Harbor, according to the Daily Voice.
