The Georgia woman who allegedly masterminded a plot to murder her husband was battling him in court amid contentious divorce proceedings over custody of their three children, millions of dollars in family assets and access to a private jet, according to Fox News.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, 36-year-old Lindsay Shiver was arrested last month in the Bahamas after police allegedly uncovered plans to murder her 38-year-old husband, Robert Shiver.
Bahamian authorities also arrested Lindsay’s alleged lover, 28-year-old Terrance Bethel, and 29-year-old Farron Newbold in connection with plot, according to the Thomasville Times-Enterprise.
The couple are said to have a home in the Bahamas, where they vacationed frequently, in addition to their primary 8,000-square-foot residence in Thomasville, Georgia.
Court records show that Robert filed for divorce in April upon discovering that Lindsay was engaging in “adulterous conduct” by having an affair with Bethel, blowing apart the couple’s marriage, CNN reports.
Robert’s petition seeks primary custody of the kids and exclusive use of their $2.5 million house; he contends he does not have to pay Lindsay alimony.
Lindsay reportedly responded in court by alleging that Robert subjected her to “physical and mental cruel treatment,” which included domestic violence, according to Fox News.
She also denied the affair, with her lawyers writing in a court filing: “Any extramarital relationship defendant has had was during the parties’ separation and legally condoned by husband,” according to Fox News.
Lindsay is seeking primary custody of the kids and payments from Robert for child support and alimony, in addition to sole use of the couple’s house.
“Wife feels unsafe in the marital home and has installed locks on the interior doors of the home for protection,” Lindsay’s lawyer wrote in seeking a restraining order, according to Fox News. “Husband has abused the wife in the home in the children’s presence on multiple occasions, not only physically but also mentally and emotionally.”
Lindsay further alleges that Robert is hiding money and has prevented her from accessing money.
“The parties . . . have an overall expensive lifestyle in general,” Lindsay’s attorney wrote. “Suddenly husband is not permitting wife to use the jet or have access to funds.”
Lindsay also has “incurred debt beyond her means to pay,” her court filing states, according to CNN.
A former beauty pageant contestant, Lindsay was a cheerleader at Auburn University and graduated with a degree in marketing. It was at Auburn where Lindsay met Robert, who was on the school’s football team. He played briefly for the Atlanta Falcons before beginning a career in business.
Police in the Bahamas discovered the planned hit while investigating a break-in at a bar on July 16, when they came upon WhatsApp messages discussing the proposed killing.
A deposition had been scheduled for Lindsay on July 18 as part of the divorce case, however a hearing in that matter is now set for October 31.
Before Robert filed for divorce, Lindsay had posted photos frequently on social media about her marriage and family life.
“The key to a perfect marriage is having two imperfect people, who refuse to give up on each other,” one post said. “So thankful for that fitness class 13 years ago that brought us together and all of the love, laughter, and life we have created ever since! I love you babe.”
