“Preppy Killer” Robert Chambers, who was released from prison last week after serving a 15-year sentence, was seen in public this week, in New York.
According to the New York Post, 56-year-old Chambers was seen walking while wearing a denim jacket and sunglasses on Wednesday, wearing what appeared to be a wedding ring on his left hand. He reportedly “appeared agitated” while the Post reporters asked him for comment.
In 2008, Chambers returned to prison to serve out 15 years of a 19-year prison sentence, following a previous sentence for the August 1986 death of Jennifer Levin, 18.
Chambers was initially charged with murder in connection with Levin’s death, but those charges were dropped after a jury couldn’t decide on a guilty verdict.
Prosecutors said Chambers strangled Levin and left her body in Central Park. He ultimately accepted the prosecution’s deal for a manslaughter conviction and subsequently sentenced in 1988. He was released from prison in 2003 but years later, returned after he was convicted on drugs and assault charges.
Law & Crime reports that Chambers insisted that Levin died after they had rough sex which included choking, but he was adamant that the death was accidental. He also claimed that Levin had raped him and “hurt his genitals during rough sex.”
However, instead of going to police immediately, Chambers hid out while watching cops as they investigated the scene.
In 2003, following his prison sentence, Levin’s mother, Ellen Levin, mother told The New York Times that he “never admitted any culpability in this crime, he has never shown any remorse, he has never truly said he is sorry for the pain he inflicted on my family.”
In 2008, Chambers was sentenced again after police found cocaine, crack pipes, and packaging materials inside his apartment. Prosecutors said he had been selling drugs out of his home.
Meanwhile, it’s unclear if Chambers has gotten married despite wearing a ring, but there has been speculation that he married his longtime girlfriend, 54-year-old Shawn Kovell, 54. The pair were reportedly still together when he was released from prison last month.
Kovell reportedly met Chambers in 1986 and stayed with him throughout his prison sentences, the Post reports.
According to state records, Chambers now lives in Rockland County and will remain under strict probation guidelines until 2028.
