14-Year-Old Boy Arrested in Shooting Death of 12-Year-Old Boy at Birthday Celebration

A 14-year-old Minnesota boy has been arrested, charged in the shooting death of a 12-year-old boy who was celebrating a cousin’s birthday.

Family identified the victim as Markee Jones, KSTP reported.

The boy’s uncle, Martez Hill, said several boys “were playing with a gun” before they were to head off for go-karting when Markee was shot. Family members said that someone they know brought the gun into the house without their knowledge.

“Why would he bring a gun into my sister’s house?” asked one family member. “That’s not right.”

Markee was taken to Regions Hospital, where he died.

“I hope this brings a lot of attention to people who have firearms,” said Lakrisha Hill, Markee’s aunt. “To make sure you keep your gun safely locked away and kids are curious, and now I have a nephew to bury because of somebody else’s mistake.”

The 14-year-old is in custody on suspicion of manslaughter and is being held at the Ramsey County Juvenile Detention Center, police said.

Family members called on the gun owner to surrender.
