Lawyers for the family of accused Long Island serial killer Rex Heuermann say his adult children are in a “surreal, waking horror show,” according to Fox News Digital.
Heuermann’s two adult children, 26-year-old Victoria Heuermann, and Christopher Sheridan, 33, are reportedly trying to put their lives back together while dealing with the backlash of Heuermann’s arrest and his new identity as an alleged serial killer.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, Heuermann was arrested on July 13 for the deaths of three of the four women known collectively as the “Gilgo Four.” The bodies were found within days of each other on Gilgo Beach in December 2010. All four women were buried in burlap sacks.
Heuermann is now charged with six counts of murder in the deaths of Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Megan Waterman, 22; and Amber Lynn Costello, 27; and is the prime suspect in the death of Brainard-Barnes.
“They’re constantly… having to reevaluate what is happening to them, almost in real-time. Obviously, the deplorable conditions that their house was left in – torn apart from the floorboards to the shingles, basically, is their paramount concern,” Vess Mitev, who represents Heuermann’s children, told Fox News Digital.
“[They’re] trying to regain some basic sense of normalcy, which is completely impossible at this point. They’re living in a surreal, waking horror show.
“Their rights and liberties have to be protected. And that investigation… is now heating up with the DA handing over troves of documents last week, and… the leads the DA may be pursuing, whatever they may be, at some point may intertwine… with the rights and remedies that my clients have and enjoy under the Constitution and under the laws of New York.”
Meanwhile, the daughter of the “Happy Face” serial killer, Melissa Moore, created a GoFundMe fundraiser for Heuermann’s wife, Asa Ellerup, to help with the family’s basic needs and to possibly help restore their home, which was reportedly damaged after investigators searched the residence for evidence.
“The floors are ripped up,” Ellerup’s attorney Robert Macedonio previously said. “Mattresses were taken. The couch was cut open. There’s holes in part of the walls. Right now, they’re going through everything, sorting through everything, trying to obtain new mattresses.”
Heuermann remains behind bars at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility without bail. Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon said Heuermann is in an isolated cell alone and appears to be “comfortable.”
Heuermann pleaded not guilty to the murders during an arraignment last week at the Suffolk County Court. He’s due back in court on September 27, where Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney plans to hand over documents, photos, autopsies, and security surveillance footage.
