A New York doctor and her 4-month-old daughter were reportedly fatally shot on Saturday in what is being investigated as a murder-suicide.
Mount Sanai oncologist Dr. Krystal Cascetta is believed to have entered the baby’s room, where she shot the baby and herself. Sources told The Journal that Cascetta’s husband was away at the time but her parents were in the home.
A neighbor told the New York Post that ambulances and police came to Cascetta’s Somers home two or three times this summer. However, the nature of those visits is unclear.
State Trooper Steven Nevel said whoever heard the two shots be fired eventually gained entry to the locked room and discovered Cascetta and her baby. Someone inside the home called 911, according to NBC.
“We know, 100 percent, without a doubt, that it was a murder-suicide,” Nevel commented.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Mount Sanai Hospital issued the following statement to NBC: “The Mount Sinai community is greatly saddened by the tragic loss of a Mount Sinai Health System doctor and her child. We extend our deepest sympathies to Dr. Cascetta’s family, friends, colleagues, and patients.”
