A Maryland man who says he was part of the search team that found the body of hiker mom Rachel Morin on Sunday says the 37-year-old fitness enthusiast was found in a tunnel just off the Ma and Pa Trail in Bel Air.
Police have not said specifically where the body was found, but they launched a homicide investigation even before a medical examiner had identified the victim. Investigators have also disputed Michael Gabriszeski’s account of the discovery of Morin’s body, saying he has “no firsthand knowledge of the crime scene,” as CrimeOnline reported.
Gabriszeski, whose daughter was friends with Morin, told WMAR he, his daughter, and a friend joined the search on Sunday after Morin was reported missing by her boyfriend late Saturday night.
‘I kept telling them to search the tunnels, because I had a feeling about these tunnels,” Gabriszeski said. “And I walked forward to search the one tunnel, and they searched the one, and that’s where they found her.”
Gabriszeski said the body was found in a drain tunnel, a short, covered ditch that directs water off the trail during heavy rains.
Gabriszeski said he hopes the discovery of Morin’s body helps her family find closure and that investigators soon “catch the person that did this trifling act.”
The Harford County Sheriff’s Office has said investigators have no suspects in Morin’s murder, but Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler declined to say if there was a person of interest. They have not yet revealed the cause of death.
Detectives have asked anyone who may have been at the trail Saturday night to come forward, especially if they took any videos or photos.
“Something like this should not happen in Harford County,” Gabriszeski said.
