Investigators in Maryland have information — and video — for a possible suspect in the murder of hiker mom Rachel Morin earlier this month.
Colonel William Davis, chief deputy of the Harford County Sheriff’s Office made the announcement at a news conference Thursday afternoon, saying that DNA evidence in Morin’s murder was linked to a crime in Los Angeles in March.
Investigators provided a video showing the suspect on surveillance camera leaving the home where the assault took place. Davis said he did not have details about the Los Angeles crime.
“This DNA evidence has come back as a match tied to a home invasion and an assault of a young girl in Los Angeles this past March,” Davis said. “Unfortunately, that suspect has not been positively identified, but he did leave behind his DNA.”
Morin, a mother of 5, was reported missing late on August 5 after she failed to return home from a run on the Ma and Pa Heritage Trail in Bel Air, as CrimeOnline previously reported. Her body was found the following afternoon.
Although the suspect has not been identified, Davis said he is about 5 feet 9 inches tall and 160 pounds. He was Hispanic and in his 20s.
“We believe this was a person that Rachel didn’t know and was possibly a random act of violence,” Davis said.
“We don’t have any clue where he could be. We don’t even know if he’s still in the state of Maryland.”
Davis added that investigators have added a new email address for tips about the murder: RMTIPS@harfordsheriff.org.
