A suspect in the horrific rape and murder of a Texas 11-year-old has been arrested, ABC13 reports.
On Saturday, authorities announced that Juan Carlos Garcia-Rodriguez was detained in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Police one day earlier had named 18-year-old Garcia-Rodriguez as a person of interest in the death of Maria Gonzalez, whose body was found last weekend in a plastic garbage bag inside a laundry basket, which was hidden under a bed inside her Pasadena home, according to Fox 26.
On August 12, Gonzalez was at the residence while her father was working when he got a message from her saying someone had knocked on the door. The father told the girl not to answer and she said she would not. He never heard from her again.
The father asked the girl’s aunt and uncle to check on her around 1 p.m., but they could not find her. When the father got off work at 3 p.m., he returned home only to make the heart-breaking discovery.
Since Friday, investigators have secured further evidence that allegedly ties Garcia-Rodriguez to the girl’s death, according to KHOU-TV.
Garcia-Rodriguez is said to have been living in the same apartment complex as Gonzalez. Police had interviewed him among other area residents on the day Gonzalez was found dead, but he had not been a person of interest at the time.
There was no evidence of forced entry into the apartment and it did not appear anything was stolen
Garcia-Rodriguez is expected to be charged with capital murder and will be extradited back to Texas.
