Police continue their search for Georgia toddler, J’Asiah Mitchell, who was reported missing by his father Wednesday night, although cops say they don’t believe his story.
According to AJC, police drained a pond at an East Point apartment complex last week during the search for J’Asiah, and have conducted numerous land searches from East Point to Griffin, but there is still no sign of the 2-year-old.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, police said J’Asiah was initially reported kidnapped just before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday by his father, Artavious North, 23. North allegedly said someone took the child during an armed robbery in front of an apartment complex in Panthersville, in DeKalb County.
Police, however, said they’ve found no evidence of the robbery and no evidence that North was in DeKalb County on Wednesday. North was subsequently arrested and charged with making false statements and false report of a crime.
J’Asiah’s mother, Asia Mitchell, has since been organizing her own searches and posting for assistance on social media.
“Everybody’s night is back to normal and here I am still crying and wondering where my baby is,” she wrote at around 3 a.m. on Facebook Sunday.
She later said on Facebook Live that she can hardly eat, knowing that her only son is missing. She said J’Ashiah was supposed to stay with his father Wednesday night, but North called her and told her the boy had been taken during the alleged robbery.
“I just need everybody to uplift me,” Mitchell said. “I just need as much support as I can, ‘cause I’m trying to be as strong as I can. I’m trying to be as positive as I can … I need to be strong. I can’t be weak because (if) I’m being weak, everybody else around me is gonna follow suit and be weak, too.”
Meanwhile, East Point Police told 11Alive that North is now considered a person of interest in the case, although he has not been charged at this point. There are currently no other persons of interest in the child’s disappearance.
The only description given to police by North was that the child was last seen in Buzz Lightyear pajamas.
“We are following all leads as it pertains to this case. As this case develops we will keep you advised. We are asking anyone with information about this case to contact the East Point Police Department,” police said in a previous statement.
Anyone with information should call 911 or Dekalb police at 770-724-7850. You can also contact CrimeStoppers at 404-577-TIPS.
