An Oklahoma third grade teacher was arrested last week after she apparently came to work drunk on the first day of school.
School officials called 53-year-old Kimberly Coates into a meeting on August 17 after noticing she appeared “off” in her classroom, KFOR reported.
“The school administration contacted our school resource officer,” said Perkins Police Department Sgt. Spencer Gedont. “Whenever he got there, he saw some signs that maybe she was impaired.”
According to body camera footage, Coates initially said she took medication for anxiety and agreed to a breathalyzer test, which showed her blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit.
At that point, Coates admitted drinking alcohol the night before and on her way to school but insisted she didn’t drink anything while at work.
School Superintendent Doug Ogle returned from gathering Coates’ personal belongins with a blue plastic cup that apparently contained wine.
“No more games, right? What is in that?” Ogle said as he set the cup down.
Coates replied that it was her “juice.” The officer sniffed the cup and said, “that there is wine.”
Coates said she brought the cup from home and that the lingering smell was from the night before.
She was arrested for public intoxication and was released on a recognizance bond the next day, according to court records. She was scheduled for arraignment on Tuesday, but her attorney appeared in court that day and told the judge his client had entered an inpatient treatment program. He asked that her hearing be postponed until October 9, and the judge agreed to “take a bench warrant under advisement until that time.”
