A retired police sergeant angry about a divorce opened fire at a legendary California biker bar Wednesday night, killing three people and wounded five others — including his estranged wife — before deputies shot him down.
A sixth person was hospitalized with a non-gunshot injury. Hospital officials said two of the wounded were critically hurt, and the other four were in stable condition, as CrimeOnline previously reported.
John Patrick Snowling, 59, retired from the Ventura Police Department in February 2014 after at 32 year career in law enforcement that included serving as police union president. He separated from his wife, Marie Snowling, in 2020 after 22 years of marriage. She filed for divorce in March, and by some accounts, Snowling wasn’t handling it well.
William Mosby, Marie Snowling’s father, told the Press Enterprise from the hospital where his daughter was recovering from being shot in the jaw that Snowling “was a crazy husband who couldn’t deal with the divorce.”
Officials have not released the names of any of the other victims of the shooting during the weekly spaghetti dinner at Cook’s Corner, a restaurant and bar in Trabuco Canyon that dates back to the 1880s, CrimeOnline reported earlier. They have also not provided many details about the shooting.
Orange County deputies got the call about the shooting just after 7 p.m. and were on the scene two minutes later. They encountered Snowling outside the bar, where witnesses said he opened fire on the deputies, who returned fire and killed him.
It’s not known how many people were at the popular bar, but investigators said they were interviewing between 30 and 40 witnesses.
