On Thursday, three suspects were charged in Michigan with conspiring to kidnap two twin newborn boys from their mother in an ordeal that sparked an AMBER Alert.
The two 14-day-old boys were abducted from their mother at a Livonia hotel on Sunday, though they were surrendered to Detroit police shortly after they issued the alert on Monday. Since then, Shantell Re-Azia Jones, 23, Curtis Lee Slay, 18, and Davion Demetrius Sherman Chandler, 19, were charged in connection with the reported kidnapping, according to WDIV.
The suspects are accused of befriending the 30-year-old mother to take her infant sons. They allegedly offered to help the woman to gain access to the twins and steal them.
WDIV reported that the mother was getting a drink from a vending machine at the hotel when her babies were kidnapped. Police eventually confirmed allegations made by the twins’ paternal grandmother that the abductors had offered help via social media.
According to the news outlet, Jones, Slay, and Sherman Chandler were arrested on Tuesday. A fourth suspect — a 16-year-old girl– was arrested, but she has not been formally charged.
It is unclear who took the infants to the police. Detroit Police Chief James White said the two babies are in good condition.
Jones, Slay, and Sherman Chandler are charged with kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and larceny in a building. They remain jailed without bond, according to The Detroit News.
WDIV reported that a charging decision regarding the 16-year-old girl will be made next week.
