Dramatic new video shows a Michigan police officer saving the life of a choking baby during a traffic stop, Fox 2 reports.
Just after 6 p.m. last Tuesday, Warren police officer Brendan Fraser pulled over a Chevrolet Camaro, which was reportedly going around 80 miles per hour in a 45-MPH zone.
“I thought he was racing somebody, or maybe he was trying to get away from something,” Fraser told CBS Detroit.
But the situation was for more serious.
Dashcam footage shows Fraser walking up to the vehicle and the occupants frantically pleading with him to help an 18-month-old boy, who was not breathing and turning blue. The child’s eyes had rolled toward the back of his head.
“Help, help, we got a baby in here dying,” the driver says in the video.
The video shows Frasier taking hold of the infant and initiating back blows in an effort to dislodge whatever was obstructing his throat. The maneuver eventually worked and the child began breathing again.
Another officer then took the tot and rushed him to a nearby medical facility. The boy was transferred to St. John Hospital and has since recovered.
Reflecting on the situation, Fraser said he understood why the driver was speeding.
“And then, really, now it made sense when he handed his baby over. He’s headed to the hospital that’s about three-quarters of a mile away.”
He added: “It was a big relief, for sure. When the child started breathing and you saw the color come back around its lips.”
Officials recommend calling 911 first in emergencies.
The city of Warren is a suburb just north of Detroit.
