New York police are looking for a man who attacked a 60-year-old woman in a Harlem subway station last week, beating her with an umbrella and her own cane.
A passenger on the train filmed the assault, which happened Friday at about 3:30 a.m., but no one intervened. Police told WNYW that the woman was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem in stable condition. The man fled the station.
This is a very disturbing video that happened at the NYC MTA. Notice how no one helped this woman but took time out to video the assault. Has Society been desensitized to assist?🤔#rideatyourownrisk #nycmta #mta #mtainfo @GovKathyHochul @NYDailyNews #nys pic.twitter.com/hJH1LVshoe

The video shows the man swing an umbrella at the woman and then grabbing her cane when she used it to defend herself. He hits her more than 50 times in the two-minute video.
Police say it’s not clear what led up to the attack.
WNYW said that despite hyperbolic reports from some media outlets, police statistics show that crime is now 4.5 percent this year compared to last year.
