A Virginia man has been arrested after he allegedly shot a woman to death in her apartment and then held police at bay for eight hours while firing at them.
State police said Harrison L. Jackson, 47, was taken into custody just before 4 a.m. on Wednesday and charged with first degree murder in the death of Jolanda M. Frye, 47, according to the Culpepper Star-Exponent.
He was also charged with five counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, possesssion of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Frye called 911 just after 7 p.m. Tuesday asking for help. State police, the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office, Culpeper Police Department, and Fauquier Sheriff’s Office responded to the call and encountered an armed Jackson on a third floor balcony. He retreated and barricaded himself inside.
When officers tried to get inside Frye’s apartment, Jackson opened fire, state police spokesman Sgt. Brent Coffey said.
Coffey said officers learned that Frye was dead as they negotiated for Jackson’s surrender, which finally came at 3:51 a.m.
State police called said the shooting was domestic in nature but did not detail the relationship between Frye and her killer.
The Star-Exponent reported that that Jackson served a six month jail sentence after pleading guilty to felony eluding in 2019.
The Culpeper Times reported that he was being held without bond in the Culpeper County Jail.
