An Arizona trucker has been charged with murder after he allegedly barreled into cars stopped at a traffic light, a crash left one woman dead and two people in critical condition.
The truck driven by 28-year-old Karan Singh was seen on surveillance video slamming into the cars at a high rate of speed — and officers who found him after he fled the scene said he appeared to be impaired, KTVK reported. A second video shot by a witness shows the aftermath.
Parker Police said Singh hit three vehicles at around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, first rear-ending a white car pulling a trailer and then slamming into the other vehicles.
“After the initial collision, all of the vehicles travelled through the intersection, into the parking lot of Terrible Herbst gas station. The commercial vehicle (the truck) and one of the vehicles hit the building before becoming engulfed in flames,” police said. “One vehicle collided into a boulder before landing on its roof in the parking lot. Another vehicle in the southbound left turn lane was also struck by the commercial vehicle.”
The Arizona Republic said that Singh was found a block away at Ruperto’s Mexican Restaurant, where he ordered a burrito and sat down to eat it.
Police Chief Michael Bailey said Singh tested positive for drugs in a preliminary urine test, but police are awaiting a full toxicology report before provide more details or adding more charges.
Eight people were injured in the crash, police said, two of them critically. Those two were airlifted to a Phoenix hospital.
Debbie Fritzen told KTVK that her cousins and their husbands were in the last vehicle the truck hit.
“My cousin Amy died instantly, and my cousin Peggy is on life support, and they don’t think she’s going to make it,” she said.
Singh has been charged with second degree murder and eight counts of aggravated assault. He was treated at a nearby hospital for minor injuries before being booked, the Republic said.
