An Ohio man was shot and killed by police on Saturday after a three-state alleged crime spree that included killing his stepfather, kidnapping and carjacking at least one woman, and taking hostages inside a gas station.
Ironton Police warned the public Friday night to be on the lookout for David Maynard after they found Maynard’s stepfather fatally shot and his girlfriend tied up in a home but otherwise unharmed, WOWK reported.
From Ironton, Maynard reportedly made his way about 35 miles away to Louisa, Kentucky, where on Saturday he allegedly kidnapped a woman and stole her car, which was later recovered and the woman found safe. There were reports that he kidnapped a second woman and stole her car, but Kentucky State Trooper Shane Goodall said a second vehicle has not been located, and no one has been reported missing in the area, WCHS reported.
Later on Saturday, he was reportedly spotted in Kenova, West Virginia, prompting an intense search in that area that brought West Virginia state troopers to the scene. West Virginia State Police Captain R.A. Maddy said that Sergeant Lee Pennington stopped at a gas station in Ceredo and saw Maynard inside, behind the counter with the clerk.
Maynard spotted Pennington outside and pointed a gun at him, which started the hostage situation with the clerk and two customers who were inside at the time.
Maddy said that a State Police Special Response Team responded to the scene with a hostage negotiator, who persuaded Maynard to release two of the hostages. Maynard then requested a blanket for the third hostage, and police put it at the front door. When Maynard exited to pick up the blanket, shots rang out. Maynard was taken to Cabel Huntington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“No officers were injured during this incident and the third hostage was secure and safe,” Maddy said.
