Hunter Biden — the son of President Joe Biden — was indicted on federal gun charges on Thursday in Delaware.
NBC reported that Hunter Biden, 53, was indicted on three counts of possession of a gun while using narcotics. Two of those counts stem from claims he made in 2018 in which he denied using narcotics when he bought a Colt Cobra revolver in 2018. The third count alleges he had the firearm while under the influence of narcotics.
Charges against Hunter Biden come weeks after a judge dismantled a plea deal, specifically a diversion agreement, that would have had him serve probation. According to NBC, the prosecution and defense agreed to have him plead guilty to failing to pay his taxes, a misdemeanor. In exchange, a charge for illegally owning a Colt Cobra .38 Special handgun would be dropped if he completed the diversion agreement.
However, the judge in this case barred the plea agreement, citing its unconventional stipulations. Prosecutors denied the court’s assertion that the deal would shield Hunter Biden from other tax-related crimes from the same period.
CNN reported that Hunter Biden was ordered to appear in court but a date is pending. The outlet noted that this is the first time the Justice Department has handed down an indictment to the son of a sitting president.
