A Pennsylvania woman is facing homicide charges for killing her 12-day-old son on Tuesday.
According to WPXI, Monongahela police who responded to a call of an infant who was not breathing learned that Darian Helmantoler, 22, stopped communicating with 911 dispatchers and refused to perform CPR. Helmantoler allegedly told police she was sleeping in bed with her son after feeding him and she may have rolled onto him.
Responding police officers noticed the newborn was bleeding from his nose and he had a cut on his forehead. Helmantoler — who had blood on her shirt — claimed the cut was probably caused by his “long fingernails,” the Observer-Reporter reported. Authorities also alleged they discovered a bloody towel in the bathroom.
KDKA reported that officers discovered two alcoholic drinks on tables on Helmantoler’s front porch.
Helmantoler’s son died at the hospital. A doctor said the baby had blue-gray coloring around his mouth and on the front of his neck, according to Tribune Live.
Helmantoler told police that she lived alone with her son, but her mother said she lived with a man, KDKA reported.
The newborn’s mother allegedly told police that a “baby camera” may have been recording. She and her son were reportedly alone in the apartment when the fatal incident occurred.
Officials have not yet disclosed the newborn’s cause of death.
Meanwhile, Helmantoler is charged with homicide, aggravated assault, child endangerment, and reckless endangerment. She is due back in court on September 20.
