A Louisiana man on the run for 32 years was captured in Mexico after the FBI was tipped off to his location in Mexico.
Greg Lawson, 63, took off before a jury found him guilty of attempted second degree murder in 1991, and investigators had been searching for him since.
From the beginning the FBI said, investigators suspected he was in Mexico, but it wasn’t until a tip came in earlier this month that they knew for sure. Lawson was arrested in Huatulco on September 23 and quickly deported by Mexican authorities for immigration violations.
Bienville Parish sheriff’s deputies traveled to Houston, Texas, on Wednesday to pick him up at the airport, KTBS reported.
Lawson, from a well known family in Bienville Parish, was convicted of trying to kill a lifelong friend, Seth Garlington, in 1991. Both men grew up in Ringgold, and Lawson reportedly often got away with various crimes because of his family’s connections.
On the day of this crime, Lawson and Garlington got into a dispute, and Lawson first forced Garlington’s vehicle off the road. Then they got into a fist fight in a gas station parking lot before both men pulled guns, and Lawson shot Garlington.
Garlington survived, and Lawson was charged with attempted second-degree murder. But he fled before the verdict was announced. Investigators found his truck a block from the Claiborne Parish Courthouse, where his trial had been moved because of his connections in Bienville Parish.
Lawson was spotted laughing with deputies as they handcuffed him on arrival in Houston.
