Convicted killer nurse Lucy Letby will go back to court next year for a retrial on a charge of attempting to kill a baby.

Letby, 33, was found guilty in August of killing seven babies in a neonatal unit at Countess of Chester Hospital, where she worked at the time, and trying to kill six others, as CrimeOnline previously reported. The incidents took place in 2015 and 2016.

She was sentenced to life in prison for each count with no possibility of parole.

The jury found Letby not guilty on two counts of attempted murder and could not come to a decision on four others.

Letby, who refused to attend parts of her trial where the verdicts were read and she was sentenced, attended a hearing on the retrial question via video link, the BBC reported.

Prosecutors said they intended to retry the former nurse for only one of the remaining cases in which the jury reached no decision — a baby girl, known as Baby K, who died in February 2016.

The retrial is tentatively set for June 10, 2024, and is expected to last two to three weeks.

Chief prosecutor Jonathan Storer told the court that making decision about seeking retrials was “extremely complex and difficult.”

“Before reaching our conclusions, we listened carefully to the views of the families affected, police and prosecution counsel,” he said.

Letby has maintained her innocence throughout the process and has filed an appeal on the convictions.
