Accused Long Island serial killer Rex Heuermann told a judge that he has been reviewing evidence against him while behind bars at the Suffolk County jail.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, Heuermann, 59, who stands accused of killing three women, appeared for a status hearing in a Manhattan court Wednesday morning, sporting a new haircut with his hands cuffed behind his back.
Heuermann confirmed he had reviewed case evidence in his cell, averaging 2-3 hours daily, CNN reports. Other than briefly answering the judge’s question, Heuermann remained silent during the hearing. Before leaving the courtroom, he reportedly glanced at the gallery with a small smirk.
Also in court, prosecutors stated that they already provided Heuermann’s legal team with over 10 terabytes of evidence in August. They handed over more evidence Wednesday, including approximately 5,000 pages related to two victims, grand jury testimony, police memos from the home search at his Massapequa Park residence, and security footage.
Prosecutors also handed over evidence showing that the defendant’s DNA matched DNA found on a discarded pizza box that investigators found outside of Heuermann’s Manhattan architectural firm. The DNA from the pizza box had been compared with a male hair found on a burlap sack, used to bound one of the victims.
Police arrested Heuermann in July for the deaths of three of the four women known collectively as the “Gilgo Four.” The bodies were found within days of each other on Gilgo Beach in December 2010. All four women were buried in burlap sacks.
Heuermann has been charged with six counts of murder in the deaths of Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Megan Waterman, 22; and Amber Lynn Costello, 27; and is the prime suspect in the death of 25-year-old Maureen Brainard-Barnes.
Brainard-Barnes was abducted in 2007, Barthelemy in 2009, and Waterman and Costello in 2010.
Heuermann pleaded not guilty at his arraignment. He remains behind bars at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility without bail.
