A Michigan teacher was hospitalized this week after a teenage student threw a chair in a feud with a peer and struck the instructor, knocking them to the floor, WJRT-TV reports.
All of it was caught on camera.
The video shows two female students arguing with each other on Thursday morning in a classroom at Southwestern Academy in Flint. One of the students, a 15-year-old junior, picked up a desk chair and then threw it.
The chair can be seen striking a female teacher in their head, at which point the teacher fell to the ground, according to mlive.com.
A school resource officer responded and found the teacher on the floor with injuries to their head. The officer broke up the fight and arrested both students.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton has approved charging the girl who threw the chair with two counts of felonious assault, according to WJRT-TV.
In a statement, Flint Community Schools said the teacher, whose identity has not been released, was sent to the hospital but has since been released and is doing well. The teacher intends to return to the classroom, the television station reports.
Aside from the criminal charges, the student who threw the chair could be punished under the district’s code of conduct. The district is presently investigating the incident, according to a letter the district sent to parents.
“We take this matter seriously and are fully committed to addressing it in a manner that adheres to the law and aligns with the policies of our district,” Superintendent Kevelin Jones wrote in the letter. “We understand the concern and worry that incidents like this can generate within our school community.”
