Florida police have arrested a 23-year-old man for the murder of an 81-year-old gate security guard at a senior living community in Hernando County.
The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said it was initially called to the High Point community for a medical emergency at about 10:15 Thursday night but quickly determined that it was “in fact a criminal act.”
The victim, identified by WFLA as Ed Mead, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The sheriff’s office, using witness statements and video footage, identified Jeremy Jason Patterson as a person of interest and then a suspect in Mead’s death.
Patterson was located in a nearby wooded area hours later and taken into custody. Investigators have not released any details about the murder or suggested a motive.
Arlene Dyer, a High Point resident, told WFLA that she saw a man who looked like the suspect walking by her house Friday morning and called 911. Dispatchers told her not to approach him.
“It’s disturbing,” Dyer said. “It’s disturbing that I had the opportunity to get him and I didn’t.”
