A Texas woman was sentenced on Tuesday to 75 years in prison for torturing another woman for two years.
The 24-year-old victim moved in with Alicia Calderon, 37, in 2019 to help her with her children and a disabled elderly woman in exchange for free rent. Prosecutors said Calderon took the woman’s phone and withheld food within months of her moving in, according to The Dallas Morning News.
Calderon prevented the victim from leaving the trailer and, at one point, locked her in a room with the elderly woman. The victim reportedly lost half her weight and was unable to care for the elderly woman.
In 2021, Calderon caught the victim stealing food and punished her by locking her in a dog cage and dumping boiling water on her legs. Prosecutors said she also suffered burns to her arms, chest, and back when Calderon dumped boiling water on her later that year. KDFW provided pictures that show the woman with scars covering her arms.
In February 2022, the victim was given a phone by someone else in the household — which she used to message her stepfather on Facebook about being locked in a room and needing help. Collin County police who responded to the trailer found the victim — who was 68 pounds — covered in second- and third-degree burns with a shaved head, according to The Dallas Morning News.
Deputies initially believed the elderly woman at Calderon’s home was dead due to her poor condition. Prosecutors showed how Calderon spent the elderly woman’s $78,000 inheritance in three months and was cashing her Social Security checks. Calderon’s husband was implicated and charged with elderly exploitation and abuse. He is awaiting trial.
The victim was hospitalized for six weeks and suffered permanent nerve damage. KHOU reported that she testified during Calderon’s trial.
