A search of a Florida home for narcotics resulted in the startling discovery of a dead newborn this week.
Luciana Urbina, 32, appeared in a Lee County court Thursday afternoon on a charge of trafficking opioids after deputies found a plastic bag containing 39 grams of fentanyl on a bedroom shelf in her home, WINK reported.
“The defendant resides in a residence where the sheriff’s office was investigating a deceased 2-month-old,” a deputy said in court.
Local news reports were not clear on the sequence of events that led to the discovery of the baby, and Urbina is not not charged in relation to the child. What is clear is that the fentanyl was found during a search of the home on Wednesday in a room that detectives say was linked to Urbina. An incident report says that Urbina would not speak with detectives about the confiscated items they found, instead asking what items they were talking about, the News-Press reported.
The search warrant was approved by Lee County Circuit Judge Frank Porter, but it isn’t clear if the search was related to the drugs or the infant. The News-Press said that the search involved the use of narcotics and led to the discovery of the baby, but the newspaper also said that deputies went to Urbina’s home for a homicide investigation.
No further information was released about the dead newborn.
By Friday morning, no charges had been filed related to the child’s death, and Urbina had been released from jail on a $100,000 bond, according to jail records. She is due in court again on November 6.
