Former NFL player Sergio Brown has been taken into custody in San Diego, following the September death of his mother.
According to Fox News Digital, Brown was arrested Tuesday on a felony fugitive warrant, nearly a month after his mother’s body was discovered near an Illinois creek.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, family members notified Maywood police that they were unable to contact Sergio or his 73-year-old mother, Myrtle Brown. Police later found Myrtle dead in a creek near her suburban Maywood home, on September 16.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Officer ruled her death a homicide Sunday afternoon, saying she “multiple injuries due to assault,” the Chicago Tribune reported.
Police subsequently filed a warrant for Sergio Brown’s arrest, who managed to elude police until Tuesday.
Last month, Brown made a video calling his mother’s death “fake news” and blamed the FBI, Deadspin reported. In that video, he said he thought his mother was “on vacation” in the Mexican state of Sinaloa. The post was initially tagged in Mexico but was deleted and reposted on another of his accounts without the location.
He also said he was kidnapped twice by Mayfield police.

“Fake news. Fake news. Fake news,” Brown said in another video. “It has to be the FBI that came into my house on Bob Marley’s death day with the 511 haze and gas unwarranted. They kidnapped me twice from home – the Maywood Police Department. It had to be the FBI or the Maywood police.”
“I thought my f***ing mama was on vacation in Sinaloa. That’s f****ing fake news. Get the f*** out of my god**** face. She’s retired, and you want to come to me? The FBI had to do it. They have some power to do some s*** like that. What the f*** is going on? That’s fake news.”
Brown was signed by five teams across seven seasons in the NFL between 2010 and 2016.
