A North Carolina dad accused of kidnapping his 4-year-old daughter turned himself in Monday night appeared in court in Durham Tuesday morning.

Mitchell Grayson, 37, is charged with aggravated assault, breaking and entering, and injury to personal property, WXII reported.

Police say Grayson broke into a Durham home, severely beat a relative of 4-year-old Paisley Grayson, and fled with the little girl.

An Amber Alert was issued on Monday, and Grayson arrived at police headquarters with the little girl Monday evening.

He told police he took the girl because he was concerned about her safety.
