A former Florida high school teacher accused of having sexual relations with a 16-year-old student has died from an apparent suicide.
The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office said Monday that Charles C. Maglio, 54, was found dead on October 1 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound near his home in Coral Springs, according to the Palm Beach Post.
Maglio was arrested last month and was facing two felony sexual misconduct charges, but the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office dropped the charges upon his death.
Maglio began teaching math at Wellington Landings Middle School in January 2016 and transferred to Wellington High School in 2020. He had previously taught at Marjory Stoneman Dougas High School.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation last December after a restaurant owner reported to school officials that Maglio was sending flowers to a teen employee. The school district notified the sheriff’s office.
Investigators said the teen described multiple sexual encounters with Maglio at his apartment. During a phone call with the teen that was monitored by law enforcement, he expressed his love and said he couldn’t wait until the teen turned 18. He did not discuss specific sexual encounters, the arrest report said.
Maglio’s attorney, Cory Strolla, said in September that Maglio “self-reported” to the school district, although they were already investigating.
“We understand that these are serious allegations, but we think that the only thing the state is going to be able to show is that he was more of a mentor to a young (person) who had a terrible home life,” Strolla said.
Strolla did not immediately comment on Monday.
