A 62-year-old Colorado woman was found dead and dismembered at the condo where she had gone to clean on Wednesday, and the man now suspected of killing her shot himself as police forced entry.
Aurora police said that Elena Vonfeldt’s son called them late Wednesday to say that he’d been unable to reach his mother and that she had missed other cleaning appointments she had during the day, according to KUSA.
The son gave them the address of her 7 a.m. appointment and said he found her car in the parking lot.
No one responded when police knocked at the door.
“Officers made the decision to force entry into the condo at which point there was a gunshot that was heard inside the house,” Aurora PD public information officer Matt Longshore said. “Officers went into the house, found a 30-year-old Aurora man now suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”
The man was rushed to the hosptial, where he died. Inside the condo, officers were shocked by what they saw.
“Based on what they observed, some of these crime scene and major crimes detectives described this as one of the most disturbing crime scenes they’ve ever been on,” said Longshore said. “As officers were clearing the house, they were met with a lot of disturbing things. They found portions of a dismembered body inside of the condo. They continued their search which led them outside to a dumpster where they found the remaining dismembered body parts in the dumpster in the back parking lot.”
Longshore said that investigators are now trying to piece together what happened between Vonfeldt’s 7 a.m. arrival and their arrival at the condo at about 11 p.m. that night.
“I don’t think the family will ever get closure unfortunately, but certainly this is just the beginning of this investigation,” he said.
