Former High School Soccer Star Shot Dead at Work, Accused Killer Remains Elusive

A former Georgia high school soccer was shot and killed Saturday morning at a Remerton bar, where she worked as a bartender.

Around 2:30 a.m., Remerton police responded to reports of a shooting at The Pier Bar (formerly known as Flip Flops) in Valdosta and found 21-year-old Brianna Long critically wounded. First responders rushed her to the South Georgia Medical Center where she was subsequently pronounced dead.

Savannah Morning News reports that investigators determined gunfire erupted outside the bar around 2 a.m. as Long and a coworker finished closing down the bar. Police said a bullet struck Long in the midst of an altercation that took place in the establishment’s parking lot.

“Many patrons were outside during the shooting and multiple vehicles were shot,” the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) said. “This case is active and ongoing.”

The GBI has not revealed what sparked the altercation. Investigators are now searching for the shooter(s), but no additional information has been provided.

Channel 2 Action News reports that Long was the “Regional Winner for Positive Athlete Georgia” while attending Paulding County High School in the 2019-2020 school year.

Anyone with information on the case is urged to contact the GBI Thomasville Office at 229-225-4090 or the Remerton Police Department at 229-247-2320. Anonymous tipsters should call 1-800-597-TIPS (8477), or submit a tip online at https://gbi.georgia.gov/submit-tips-online,
